Reviews..........
"It is plain to see from the first few bars of this album that Rob Johnston is a guitar player of supreme quality as the sound he generates from just a steel stringed guitar is astounding. ..
Awesome guitar technique was what my first impressions were of this album when I heard the opening two tracks, 'The high life' being an upbeat piece played impressively, quickly followed by 'Ratton Row', a slightly slower yet no less technical piece using a finger picking style.
When I got to track three I realised this wasn't 'just a guitar' album and that Johnston isn't just a high class guitarist but a fine singer-songwriter as well.
All three songs on this record are finely crafted works with, as expected quality accompaniment but also a delicate traditional vocal that is weathered but still slightly haunting in delivery. This was indeed a pleasant surprise and the song 'Frost on the ground' has become a firm favourite with me. In fact the songs are very nicely placed throughout which really keeps the record flowing between instrumental and song.
Comparisons can be made to people like Martin Simpson and Eric Roach but it would be very vague as not only does Johnston create a full, well rounded sound but also demonstrates a knack of personalising every track. There are no two tracks that sound the same on this record but there is an atmosphere that every number has that I have never heard on a similar artists records. Whether this was meant or not is not for me to say, but as a neutral listener it does sound as if he has stamped a unique style on the whole recording. ..
. You can't help but be astounded by the quality of the performance and the album doesn't fade at any point, just constantly well thought out numbers beautifully crafted and performed."

"..confident and joyous..fluid and reflective (and appropriately reminiscent of Martin Simpson without being cloned)... Altogether a very promising, tasteful and intelligent representation of what Mr Johnston can get up to with an acoustic guitar. Such individual, engaging and assured playing is always a pleasure to listen to." (Folk-on-Tap Magazine)
"Fantastic...an absolute pleasure." (BBC Radio Solent, live)
".with Rob's highly original, skilful guitar style and titles like "Bring Out The Beanies And Let Them Play On The Central Reservation", the festival was off to a good start." (Southsea Folk Festival '01)
